“Wagatha Christie” Costs Budget Challenge

"𝗪𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗮 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗲": 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲

Following the high-profile 2022 libel case between Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney, the legal battle continues with a new appeal focusing on costs budgeting practices.

On Monday, Vardy’s legal team challenged a judge’s previous finding that Rooney’s lawyers committed no misconduct when declaring a £221,000 costs budget. This appeal represents another development in a legal dispute that has now stretched over six years.

Jamie Carpenter KC, representing Vardy, argued that submissions from Rooney’s team were “misleading,” while seeking to limit Rooney’s recoverable costs to the originally budgeted amount. Meanwhile, Benjamin Williams KC, representing Rooney, maintained there was “no litigation misconduct” and emphasised that any criticism was directed solely at Rooney’s legal advisors rather than Rooney herself.

The case raises interesting questions about professional conduct in legal cost estimations and the appropriate remedies when budgeting issues arise.

The court has reserved judgment on this latest appeal.
